Introduction

In today's rapidly evolving professional landscape, the traditional model of employment is being challenged by the rise of freelancing. Now more than ever, professionals in various industries are exploring the opportunities and freedoms that come with being their own boss. For accountants, in particular, starting your own business offers a unique path to independence and flexibility. But is it the right choice for you? In this blog post, we'll explore the allure of freelance accounting, the challenges it presents, and the practical steps you can take to transition into this exciting career path.

The Appeal of Freelance Accounting

Starting your own accounting business holds undeniable appeal for those seeking greater autonomy and control over their careers. Imagine setting your own work hours, choosing your clients, and deciding where and how you work. With your own accounting firm, these dreams can become a reality. The flexibility to work from anywhere, the potential for higher earnings, and the ability to pursue diverse projects are just a few of the benefits that freelance accountants enjoy.

Challenges and Considerations

However, freelancing also comes with its own set of challenges. Irregular income, the need for self-discipline, and the requirement to handle your own marketing and client acquisition are just a few hurdles you may encounter. Overcoming these challenges requires resilience, determination, and a willingness to continuously learn and adapt. But for those who are willing to put in the effort, the rewards can be well worth it.

Is Freelance Accounting Right for You?

To determine if freelance accounting aligns with your skills, personality, and career goals, consider the following questions:

  • Are you comfortable with uncertainty and variability in your income?

  • Do you possess strong self-motivation and organisational skills?

  • Are you willing to invest time and effort into building your client base and personal brand?

  • Are you adaptable and open to learning new skills and technologies?

Steps to Transitioning to Freelance Accounting

If you've decided that freelance accounting is the right path for you, here are some practical steps to help you make the transition:

  • Obtain necessary certifications and licences, such as a tax agent licence or BAS agent registration.

  • Build a strong online presence and personal brand through social media, networking events, and online platforms.

  • Develop a solid business plan outlining your services, target market, and pricing structure.

  • Set up a dedicated workspace and invest in essential tools and software for accounting and client management.

Success Stories and Real-Life Experiences

To gain further insight into the world of freelance accounting, here is what I experienced:

Reflecting on my own journey, I became a freelance accountant after 8 years of experience. The reason I became a freelance accountant was 2 fold - partially wanting experience in tax, partially wanting to spend more time with my son.

As a BAS agent, I was already working with a few clients when I decided to take the leap into full time freelancing. I was referred to a few more clients through my network and I was also lucky enough to contract back to my previous employer.

I also found work with a firm that was just starting out. I was able to work on the firm's clients as well as my own, all the while gaining experience in tax and working with clients in different industries.

Yes, I was able to spend time with my son, attending school events, doing karate together, cook dinner for us.

I wish I could say it was all rosy. It wasn’t. Clients paying late, needing to work evenings, weekends and during your holiday. In saying that, I wouldn’t change a thing.

I had the flexibility to spend valuable time with my son, I learnt a lot about tax, freelancing and owning your own business.
